With lyrics like the much debated “you showed your ass and I saw the real you”, or the more unanimous “I bet it sucks to be you right now”, this song’s topic is basically an in-your-face declaration of independence, in which B. thanks God that she “dodged the bullet” with a guy that doesn’t even “deserve her tears”. So basically, we have a strong ballad full of gorgeous melodic elements with an added twist in its lyrics. And now that the video comes, there’s another layer of interpretation. In it, we see a flawless Beyoncé in underwear (speechless!), uttering those harsh words with an expression of complete happiness and even a cute naughty grin, while images of a previous marriage flash on screen. So basically, we learn how much pleasure she is taking by telling this guy off – and also how perfect she always looks/is, no matter what. And with that, we do have to feel a bit sorry for the guy: it really must have sucked to be him right then. Her thoughts on that? “Boo hoo, oh, did you expect me to care?”.
