It’s no big secret that Nika Roza Danilova, aka Zola Jesus, pretty much dominated the indie music scene last year with her track Night from the album Stridulum II. In case you were left with the feeling of wanting to hear more from the Russian American singer/songwriter, the good news is that a new album called Conatus is being released September 26. In advance there’s a buzz single out on the internet called Vessel, a track that continues all her sonic explorations with neo-gothic ambiences and unconventional melodic sensibilities. Driven by a sparse piano chord progression and flickering electronics, the minimalist backdrop gives space for the the singer’s epically dark demonic-like vocals to shine through once again and print the track with her unique identity. If Vessel serves as a taste of what we can expect from the new album, we can only say September can’t come quick enough.
