It’s not easy beating Drake at his own game, but that may be what Jojo’s just done. And if the original version of Marvin’s Room was already a very intimate affair with minimal production, Jojo now takes it to the next level, with a delicate vocal performance that is truly breathtaking, while also adding some subtle instrumental changes – and we do love the fact that those beautiful keyboards are a bit more prominent now, turning the song into an ethereal epic. So in the end, the two versions could be seen as two sides of the same coin, with Jojo’s female perspective serving as a counterpart to Drake’s thoughts… both drunk, on the phone, and dealing with their post-break-up resentments. “I’m just sayin’, you could do better, tell me have you heard that lately?”, he said, to which she now responds: “Fuck that new girl that you like so bad, she’s not crazy like me I bet you like that”. Ouch.
